BASIC DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING HERBS

FLOWERS, LEAVES or WHOLE PLANT
Pour a cup of boiling water over a heaping teaspoon of herbs, cover and steep (infuse) for 10-20 minutes. You have just created an infusion.
Strain, and take one cup 1 hour before each meal and one cup before retiring.
You may take more or less as the case requires.

Of course, there are many herbs you may want to drink as beverage teas when entertaining or taking a break from work or study.

ROOTS, BARKS, SEEDS, BERRIES, STEMS
Use 1 heaping teaspoonful of the herb to one cup of water (8 fluid ounces).

Add the required amount of herbs to fresh cold water. Bring water to a boil, using a medium high flame. Lower to simmer level (very low flame). Cover and cook for 20-30 minutes. Remember not to boil harder than a simmer.

You have just created a decoction. Strain, and take as described above.

An alternate method
Soak the herbs in fresh water overnight.
No heat is required for this method. Also use this method for flowers and leaves.

POWDERED (Ground) HERBS
Prepare as described above for flowers and leaves.

NOTES
Do not prepare herbs in aluminum cooking utensils.
Use stainless, glass, or ceramics.
We recommend using spring or filtered water.

EXCEPTION TO THE RULE
Do not boil Valerian Root.
Prepare by steeping (creating an infusion, as described above) or prepare by soaking overnight, with no heat (the alternative method, mentioned above).

If you need tea strainers, order a few of ours. Remember to rinse them out after each use, and they will last a long time.   We also carry small all-cotton bags with a drawstring, good for soaking herbs into your bath water, for example, or filling with catnip. See our supplies section.
